The Governance of City Branding in Europe

The latest in an occasional series of research surveys on the governance of European capital cities among JLGC’s responsible countries has now been published by CLAIR.

This latest Directory summarises and analyses the governance of city branding among capital cities of JLGC’s responsible countries, benchmarked against London itself.  These are Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Dublin, Helsinki, Oslo, Stockholm and Vienna.

Key findings of the survey include:

  • public-private partnerships are becoming more common, with London and Amsterdam following Berlin’s partner-based model
  • Copenhagen and Oslo both use non-profit companies organised by the local tourism sector to promote their visitor offer, while Vienna and Helsinki both operate visitor bureaux from within the city government
  • Helsinki, London and Oslo currently have no ‘official’ city brand
  • Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Oslo each have strategies and structures for using their wider metropolitan areas in global marketing
  • Dublin is largely reliant on national government agencies, while Berlin, London, Stockholm and Vienna have strong city leadership in the governance of their city marketing

The Directory was compiled with the assistance of the cities concerned, for which the office is grateful, and aims to provide a snapshot of systematic and dynamic city branding activity among these European capitals as of 2016.  It can be downloaded [Japanese] here (PDF).
