Japanese regions showcased at World Travel Market 2021

JLGC staff attended the first in-person World Travel Market since 2019 took place at London’s ExCel Centre in early November, at which a number of Japanese regions and associated destination marketing organisations were able to showcase their offer to the global travel industry ahead of the resumption of inbound visits to Japan.  As well as the Japan National Tourism Organisation, Fukushima, Hokkaido, Northern Kyushu, Shizuoka and Tokyo were all represented at the three-day event.  This caps off an accolade-heavy year for Japan’s destinations, including top rankings in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel for 2022 (Shikoku at #6) and all three top spots in Condé Nast Traveller’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2021 (the cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto respectively).

Online seminar series

JLGC continued with our regular series of online seminars for local government colleagues and public policy professionals in Japan, with the last event of the year taking place on 9 December, a seminar on issues surrounding loneliness in the UK and government policy to counteract the growing challenges around the subject.  Dr Noriko Cable, Senior Researcher at University College London whose research interests include alcohol use and mental health across lifecourse is a Senior Research Fellow at an ESRC funded Research centre, International Centre for Lifecourse Studies in Society and Health, University College London. Dr Cable currently works on intergenerational transmission of health-related behavioural patterns and presented her research and findings on loneliness as a public health issue.  A recording of the seminar can be seen here (Japanese only).

Upcoming seminars for 2022 include the topics of gender politics and policies in Germany, followed by a further seminar on different approaches to coping with life in a pandemic comparing Japan and the UK.  More details and how to register for the events can be seen here (Japanese only).
