The World Conference of Historical Cities was held in Kyoto this month, under the auspices of the League of Historical Cities, which is chaired by the city’s mayor Daisaku Kadokawa. The League, which aims to “deepen mutual understanding by transcending national boundaries and building on the common foundation of historical cities to strengthen affiliations between cities”, was initiated by the City of Kyoto in 1987 and has existed in its current form since 1994.
The UK member of the League, Norwich, was represented at the event by the Heritage Economic and Regeneration Trust (HEART), a charitable trust which develops the city’s tourist offer through better use of heritage assets.
