The city of Minamata in southern Japan, since famous for its legal struggles with big business over ‘Minamata Disease’ and the devastation of the local eco-system, has declared itself a top destination for environmentally conscious individuals and businesses. Not just as a vacation spot, but as a place to live and work.
Over 100 people attended an event at the dedicated eco-venue ‘Ecozzeria’ in Tokyo’s Marunouchi district, organised by Minamata City and Kumamoto Prefecture in October 2010, to listen to presentations from four passionate Minamata enthusiasts on the region’s history, its environmental regeneration and how native residents and people who have moved to the region are working together to revive the area.
