The Mayors and Governors of Urban 20 (U20) cities, including Tokyo, Berlin, Jakarta, Rome and Osaka, have presented the Urban 20 Communiqué to Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo ahead of next month’s G20 Summit in Osaka.
The Communiqué, endorsed by the leaders of 30 cities representing 126 million people, calls on G20 member states to work with cities to implement a series of measures related to Climate Action, Social Inclusion and Sustainable Growth.
The U20 is a new city diplomacy initiative developed by the Mayors of Buenos Aires and Paris (Chair of the C40 Group), in collaboration with the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), in December 2017 (Tokyo joined in January 2018). While Japan serves as the country chair for the 2019 G20 Summit, Tokyo will be hosting the U20 Mayors Summit.
The Communiqué can be read here (PDF), while the U20 press release can be read in full here (C40 website) and also at the TMG website.
