Several websites have gathered together information on both the current situation in Japan and how people outside of the country can help.
Firstly, the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme Alumni Association of the United Kingdom has posted an extensive list of information sources and advice for current and former JETs on their homepage here. Including phone numbers on who to contact both inside and out of Japan. They are also currently organising fundraising activities to aid the affected regions.
There is also information in English, announcements from the government and translated press conferences given by officials from Prime Minister Kan’s office on the official cabinet website here regarding the Tohoku-Pacific Earthquake and Tsunami.
Finally, the website of the British Embassy in Tokyo is also being constantly updated with the latest information and travel advice for British nationals. Anyone worried about friends or family in Japan should contact the embassy’s help line.
UPDATE: the Asahi Shimbun have posted the survival story of a local official from Minami-sanriku, one of the towns devastated by the tsunami last Friday on their website here.
