【NEW】OFFICE RECRUITMENT: Programme Coordinator

The Japan Local Government Centre (JLGC) is the London Office of Japan’s Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR) based in Tokyo with seven overseas offices, a Japanese government-affiliated foundation tasked with supporting international activities, research on local development and revitalisation policies on behalf of ministries and local government, promoting the JET Programme and a number of other international exchange programmes, and organising Japan-related seminars and sister city relations.

The Programme Coordinator will be required to provide assistance across the London office’s work in events, training and research activities, logistical and executive support in office programmes and daily office administration. Travel within the UK may be occasionally required. The ideal candidate will be an excellent team player, a self-starter able to show initiative and ready to contribute to JLGC’s goals. 

Important Notice: In order for you to be successful in applying for the above position you should be eligible to work in the UK or hold a relevant work visa.  JLGC is not able to issue sponsorship of visa applications for this position.

Main purposes of job

1. Programme Coordination

・Supporting the effective implementation of programmes managed by the Japan Local Government Centre

2. Gathering and Summarising Information

・Quick and thorough assistance in gathering and summarising of information concerning the activities and roles of UK/European local authorities etc.

3. Assistance with General Affairs

・Providing assistance and advice to Japanese staff while in London

Key tasks

1. Programme Coordination

・Support the coordination of international programmes for UK/European local authorities and Japan Local Government Centre such as our annual JLGC Seminar

・Provide administrative and logistical support for Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET Programme) alumni activities (annual careers fair, application and payment of grant-in-aid, supporting chapter activities, other duties as needed)

・Assist the coordination of the Multicultural Communities Policy Exchange Programme of the Japan Local Government Centre

・Support the coordination of receiving delegations from Japan to UK/European local authorities etc.  

2. Gathering and Summarising Information

・Gathering and summarising information concerning UK/European local authorities in support of requests from Japanese local and central governments

・Occasionally writing and drafting content on relevant topics concerning local government

3. Assistance with General Affairs

・Providing Japanese staff advice on work and life in the UK

・Assistance for Japanese staff with training programmes

・Other duties as may be required

Personnel Specification

〇 Essential

 ・Graduate (or equivalent)

 ・Excellent English language ability (for content etc.)

 ・Excellent communication and organisational skills, as well as reliability and punctuality

 ・Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.)

〇 Desirable (one or more of the following)

 ・Working level knowledge of public administration

 ・Experience of Japan and Japanese language proficiency

   ・Experience and knowledge of voluntary sector/activities  

・Ability in another Northern European language (German, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, or Norwegian)

Work hours and annual leave

・Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week

・20 days annual leave plus bank holidays

・During the probationary period (3 months), holiday entitlement accrues but you may not take paid holidays

・3 extra paid holidays during summer ・29 December to 3 January extra paid holidays

Interview

・Interviews will be held during December 2024 at our London office, successful applicants will be notified of their interview time by the start of December 2024

・The interview will be conducted mostly in English with some Japanese (where the applicant has Japanese ability)
