A delegation from Motomiya City in Fukushima Prefecture visited the UK in July, led by Mayor Takamatsu and City Assembly Chair Hashimoto, and included 24 members. Among them are 15 third-year students from local middle schools, representing Motomiya’s commitment to youth development and cultural exchange.
The delegation departed from Haneda Airport on June 30 for a five-day visit and itinerary included a visit to the Japanese Embassy in London, an exploration of University College London (UCL), interactions with students from Davenant Foundation School, and a visit to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, with which Motomiya signed a friendship agreement on April 4. The delegation also attended a commemorative event at the Fukushima Garden and visited The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School.
At the send-off ceremony, Mayor Takamatsu encouraged the students to reflect on their goals for the UK trip, emphasizing the importance of personal growth and learning. The students received badges as symbols of their participation. Representing the delegation, Riu Endo from Motomiya First Middle School expressed their collective enthusiasm, stating, “We will take the first step toward broadening our horizons and connecting with the future.”
During their stay, the students visited UCL, where they engaged with Professor Shinichi Onuma and Japanese exchange students, toured the campus, and participated in discussions. This visit offered valuable insights into higher education and academic life in the UK.
The delegation then visited the Japanese Embassy in London, where they attended a lecture and participated in discussions, further enhancing their understanding of international relations and diplomacy.
On July 1, the students toured London, visiting famous landmarks including Buckingham Palace, where they witnessed the Changing of the Guard ceremony. This day of sightseeing allowed the students to experience the cultural richness and historical significance of the UK.
On July 2, the delegation visited Davenant Foundation School. They engaged in cultural and sports activities with the local students, deepening their appreciation for cultural differences and building international friendships. Simultaneously, Mayor Takamatsu and Mr Hashimoto visited the Kings Cross Energy Center, known for its carbon-neutral initiatives, aligning with Motomiya’s own zero-carbon policies.
The delegation’s visit to The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School on July 3 was a highlight. The students were warmly welcomed by the renowned Schola Cantorum choir, who have performed in many film soundtracks including Harry Potter. This visit was made possible by the friendship agreement with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The students participated in a traditional Japanese doll painting activity, fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
On July 4, the delegation spent their last day in the UK exploring London. They visited the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and the British Museum, gaining insights into British history and culture. They also visited JLGC, where they thanked the staff for their ongoing support and discussed future cooperation.
The delegation returned to Japan on July 5, holding a closing ceremony at City Hall. Mana Watanabe from Shirasawa Middle School delivered a speech on behalf of the students, expressing their desire to share the cultural diversity and experiences they gained in the UK. Mayor Takamatsu encouraged the students to share their experiences with their families, friends, and peers, emphasizing the importance of disseminating the knowledge and insights acquired during their visit.
Motomiya’s 2024 UK delegation exemplifies the city’s dedication to fostering international understanding and providing its youth with opportunities for personal and cultural growth. This visit not only strengthened the bonds between Motomiya and the UK but also paved the way for future collaborations and friendships.
